Rotholz, Alkanna & Lettlopi

Nun bin ich nach meinem Urlaub doch länger untergetaucht als es geplant war. Doch ich war in keinster Weise untätig und kann nun auch endlich mal wieder was zeigen.
Dies sind die Ergebnisse meiner letzten abendteuerlichen Küchenfärbung - hier zwei Züge Rotholz, rechts der Erste wohlgemerkt, links auf Wolle & Seide.

It seems like I paused a bit longer after my holidays than I expected it myself. But still I wasn't lazy at all and finally I can show you a few new pics.

This is the result of my last adventurous plant dyeing in my kitchen. Two turns of redwood on wool and silk, the right one was the first of course!

Tja, und das war das Ergebnis meiner Alkanna-Färbung, links nochmal der erste Rotholz-Zug. Alkanna hatte ich etwas anders erwartet, doch kann ich trotzdem sehr gut mit den Farben leben. Die Wolle macht halt, was sie will.

Well, and this was the result of my dye with Alkanna. I expected it to be slightly different but still I like the colour pretty much. Wool has it's own life anyway!

 

 

 

 

 

Und apropos, "die Wolle macht, was sie will": Ich habe im Urlaub eine wirklich widerspenstige und eigenwillige Wolle kennengelernt: die Lettlopi aus Island!
Die Maschenprobe schien sich während des Strickens immer wieder zu verändern und am Ende scheiterte es dann an der Knopfblende, die den ganzen Schnitt verzog. Das erste Jackenmodell musste nach Fertigstellung des Körpers gnadenlos geribbelt werden- Frust pur!
Ich suchte mir ein anderes Muster und strickte in der Hoffnung, die isländischen Wollgeister würden sich beruhigen.

And speaking about the wool's own life: during my holidays I got to know a really stubborn wool: Lettlopi from Iceland! The gauge seemed to have changed a few times during the knitting process and in the end the whole project failed due to the button border which changed the shape of the piece completely! After I finished the body of the jacket I had to frog it - pure frustration!

I decided to do a different pattern and started again hoping the icelandic wool fairies would calm down.

Und das taten sie!
And they did!

Und nun?
Warte ich auf kühles Herbstwetter und arbeite in der Zwischenzeit an einem schönen Paar Handschuhe! Finnisch und pflanzengefärbt - von riihivilla.
Gibt's in Finnland eigentlich Wollgeister...?

Champagnertöne - champagne shades

Die letzte Woche war wieder eine, in der man außer dem alltäglichen Wahnsinn nicht viel anderes mehr in seinen Kopf bekommt. In zwei Wochen beginnt mein Urlaub und wie so oft will dieser scheinbar erst noch verdient werden. Ich habe schon viele Pläne, besonders "pflanzengefärbte".

Ein bißchen was ist dann aber doch noch fertig geworden. 

Der Cowl zum Beispiel, den ich mit dem letzten Walnußsud gefärbt habe.

The last week was one of those where you can't get anything else inside your head except the everyday insanities. My holidays are going to start in two weeks time and it just seems as if I still have to earn them. I've got many plans already, especially "plant dyed" ones. But at least a few things were finished. The cowl for example, dyed in the remaining walnut water.

Dazu sind noch ein Paar Stulpen entstanden, noch ein wenig heller als der Schal und für die Kamera fast unmöglich einzufangen - ein ganz heller Champagnerton.

Dazu die Frage, wie mache ich ein Foto mit Stulpe am lebenden Objekt, wenn außer mir keines zur Hand ist? Der Arm sieht da schnell wie abgeschraubt und daneben gelegt aus. Ihr könnt es euch vielleicht trotzdem vorstellen. ;-)

Also another pair of wristwarmers, even a bit lighter in colour than the cowl and almost impossible for the camera to show - a very light champagne shade.

Brings up the question of how to make a pic of the wristwarmer on the living object when there's none around but me? The arm tends to look like being screwed off and put right into the picture. But I'm sure you all can still imagine the ultimate look. ;-)

Spielraum Pflanzenfärbung - Leeway on plant dyeing

Ich erinnere mich noch, wie ich vor Jahren zum ersten Mal gefilzt habe - und alles so ganz anders wurde als ich es mir gedacht hatte. Mit der Zeit lernt man dann das Material kennen mitsamt seinen Tücken. Und wenn doch mal was daneben geht, macht man halt das Beste draus, erstaunt über wieder neue Möglichkeiten und Ideen.
Ich habe inzwischen was das Arbeiten mit Wolle angeht gelernt, ihr einen gewissen Spielraum zu geben, sie werden zu lassen und mit ihr mitzugehen. Ich finde das ungeheuer spannend!

Genauso spannend war auch dieses Wochenende, an dem ich meine erste Pflanzenfärbung gemeistert habe - auch hier nicht ohne "Spielräume". Die letzten Tage hatte ich vornehmlich in Weiß gefilzt.

I can still remember my first time felting when the result was so completely different from what I expected. Piece by piece you get to know the material together with its pitfalls. And when something goes wrong you still try to make the best of it, surprised by new possibilities and ideas.

Meanwhile I've learned to give a certain leeway to the wool, let it develop and follow its way. I think it's such an exciting process!

In the same way exciting was this weekend where I finished my first dyeing with plants - not without leeways. During the last few days I felted all white.

Nun kam die Farbe ins Spiel.
Ein paar in Nunotechnik gefilzte Stulpen im Sandelholzbad.

Then it was time for colour.
A pair of wristwarmers, felted in nunofelt technique during the dyeing process with sandalwood.

Und danach....
And afterwards...

Tja, nur leider hatte ich die Rechnung ohne den Schrumpfprozess gemacht. Der war nämlich dank Heißfärbung und zu wenig Zugabe größer als gedacht und somit waren die Stulpen erstmal zu klein. Ich war frustriert! Doch bevor ich schlafen ging, setzte ich noch eine Färbung in Walnuss auf, in der über Nacht sowohl eine andere Stulpe (zur Rettung des ersten Paares) als auch ein nunogefilzter Schal verschwanden. Heute morgen wurde dann geköchelt...

Well, I didn't expect them to shrink as much as they did, so they're simply too small now after the hot dyeing. At first I was annoyed! But before I went to sleep I put up another dyeing on the stove, this time walnut. I put a scarf and another wristwarmer into it over night. This morning it was heated...
First round, the scarf (without ends felted as a cowl) ... chocolate!!

Im zweiten Zug verschwand ein (diesmal passendes) Paar Stulpen, ebenfalls in Nunofilz.

In the second round I dyed a pair of wristwarmers (which fit this time), also nunofelted.

Und das Sandelholz-Pärchen?
Nun, ich hoffe, sie noch durch ein eingenähtes braunes Zwischenstück retten zu können. Doch das werde ich ein anderes Mal angehen. :-)

And the pair of sandalwood?

Well, I hope that I can still save them by sewing a small piece of brown felt in the middle of each. But this I will approach another time. :-)

Für heute ist erstmal Feierabend. In der Küche liegt im dritten Walnuss-Zug noch ein Schal. Obwohl die Stulpen schon so hell waren, ist glaube ich tatsächlich noch genug Farbe im Wasser für ein hellpastelliges Braun. Ich bin gespannt!

For today I did enough. In the kitchen there is still a third round in the dyeing pot, another scarf. And even though the wristwarmers had such a light colour already, I think there is still enough to give a pastel-coloured brown. I'm curious!
